She will be honored in April in Washington, D.C., as the 2020 Smithsonian Visionary Artist. The UW art professor emerita is revered by generations of ceramic artists and collectors. Now 80, Warashina, ’62, ’64, continues to create satirical and humorous figurative sculptures that explore the absurdity and foibles of human nature, as well as feminism and other political and social topics. That did it! Luckily, she switched majors and went on to become one of America’s foremost ceramic artists.
It captivated her and compelled her to take more art classes, which ultimately introduced her to the material of clay. However, one day she took a required elective in beginning drawing.
